Community Centre project on schedule
January 19, 2009
Project slated to open in late 2010
County Council received an update last week indicating that construction of the Community Centre is proceeding on budget and on schedule to open in late 2010.
With construction now well underway, over the next year the project team will begin to focus on putting in place the operational plans to make the facility the "people place" it is envisioned.
Construction of the Community Centre's foundation and 400 underground parking stalls began in February 2008. The next phase, construction of the building's structural frame, is expected to be complete by mid-summer of 2009.
The largest area within the Community Centre will be the new Strathcona County Library on two levels, allowing for improved service to current residents, and the capacity to meet future growth and evolving needs. The Community Centre also includes expanded space for municipal services, including barrier-free offices for Family and Community Services.
Art and cultural activities will have a prominent part throughout the Centre. Input from community organizations is being used in planning for areas both outdoors and indoors that will accommodate a wide range of community events, meetings and presentations. All of this will enhance and complement other nearby amenities including Festival Place, Broadmoor Lake Park and the Prairie Walkway that extends east-west throughout Centre in the Park.
The Community Centre will be connected to the existing County Hall.
Elsewhere in Centre in the Park, Christenson Development has completed the first two adult condominium buildings. The first stage of a seniors' project is 90 per cent complete with a second stage scheduled for construction in 2009. Timing of the next stages of residential or commercial development will depend on economic and market conditions.
