There are currently three programs that are available to eligible seniors who own property in Strathcona County.

1.Strathcona County Seniors Property Tax Rebate Program

Strathcona County council has approved funding for the 2013 year to assist low-income seniors who own their own homes. Seniors who qualify will receive $100.00 per household. This program is being administered in conjunction with the Province of Alberta who will mail a cheque to qualified households.  Households who are also eligible for a rebate from the Provincial Education Tax Assistance for Seniors program will receive both rebates in one cheque.

2.  Provincial - Education Property Tax Assistance for Seniors Program

The Government of Alberta rebates senior homeowners for the increase in the education portion of their property taxes.  You only need to apply once.  Rebate cheques are mailed in the summer after the property tax notices have been issued.  Cheques are mailed in late July. For further details visit www.health.alberta.ca

3. Provincial - Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program  (NEW)

The Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program will be available in 2013 and will allow eligible senior homeowners to defer all or part of their property taxes through a low-interest home equity loan with the Government of Alberta.  With this voluntary program, the Government of Alberta will pay the property taxes to the municipality on behalf of the senior, and the senior will repay the loan, with interest, when they sell their home or sooner if they choose.  For further details visit www.health.alberta.ca

More information will be available in the future.
