Sustainable Rural Roads Master Plan

Sustainable Rural Roads Master Plan logoStrathcona County Council approved the 2010 Sustainable Rural Roads Master Plan, on May 4, that guides the way rural roads are maintained and rehabilitated. The new plan was developed through a review process that began in the fall of 2009. It focuses on maintaining existing service levels, rural road reconstruction projects, and remaining within current budgetary limits.

The 2010 Sustainable Rural Roads Master Plan replaces the previous 1995 Rural Roads Master Plan and its 2003 update. All range and township (grid) roads, and roads within country residential subdivisions and rural hamlets are included in the plan. The Sustainable Rural Roads Master Plan encompasses approximately: 1,300 kilometres of roadways that includes:

  • 940 kilometres of grid roads
  • 330 kilometres of residential roadways within 202 country residential subdivisions; and
  • 30 kilometres of residential roadways within the eight rural hamlets.

Descriptions for rural roads

Developed through community input Public input was a key part of the review and development of the new plan. The input received was considered together with the economic, social and safety benefits of a well-maintained road network, and the need to protect the environment.
