Children ready for school success

Project results show majority of Strathcona County children ready for school success
Over 80 per cent of young children in Strathcona County are ready for school success, according to a recent study that measured readiness for school.
These results represent the work of the Early Childhood Mapping Project Alberta, a partnership among communities and the provincial government. Over the 2009-2011 school years, Strathcona County Kindergarten students were assessed according to the following five domains: physical health and well-being, emotional maturity, language and cognitive development, communication and general knowledge, and social competence.
“Social and emotional skills are just as important as saying the alphabet, writing and counting to ten,” says Lori Prediger, chair of the Early Childhood Mapping Coalition. “This study gives our community valuable information about the school readiness of our children, and where we can work together to equip children 0-5 years and caregivers for future success.”
Communities help create the environment children need to thrive and succeed. Studies show children tend to perform better in strong, supportive communities.
“Parents, grandparents, neighbours – everyone living in our community has a vested interest in the well-being of our children,” says Mayor Linda Osinchuk.
As part of the County’s commitment to positive childhood development, parents and community members are invited to attend an information session, It Takes a Village, on February 2 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Strathcona County Library. Attendees will learn about how children in our “village” are developing, and about opportunities to be part of the community plan to help children reach their potential. A light meal will be provided. Register by calling Sheila at 780-464-8209.
Parents can also access a variety of community resources, including information about child assessments, by contacting Parent Link at 780-416-6730.
