Mayor Linda Osinchuk challenges residents to become more active

June is Recreation and Parks month, as declared by the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA), and to kick off this month county residents are invited to take part in the first annual Mayor’s Active Challenge from May 24 to June 7, 2012.

Residents who are physically active at least eight times during the two-week event can enter to win prizes from Canadian Tire, Panago Pizza, Strathcona County and also have a chance to win an iPod shuffle.

“Choosing to be physically active is the best way to invest in a healthy future,” says Mayor Linda Osinchuk. “The Mayor's Active Challenge is a fun way to get out and enjoy our beautiful community by doing simple things such as walking, bike-riding or playing a spontaneous game of soccer on a Sunday afternoon.”

Fewer than 10 per cent of Canadian children and youth meet the current guidelines of 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) a day. Physical activity is also low in adults, with 15 per cent of adults accumulating 150 minutes of MVPA in 10 minute bouts per week, according to the recent article, Daily patterns of physical activity among Canadians (April 2012).

Ballot cards to record activity can be picked up or downloaded online and dropped off at the Recreation, Parks and Culture Administration Offices, 2025 Oak Street or faxed in at 780-449-1906. Ballots are also available for pick-up and drop-off at Millennium Place, Strathcona Wilderness Centre, Glen Allan Recreation Complex and the Kinsmen Leisure Centre.

Call 780-467-2211 to find out more information about the Active Challenge or to get ideas for physical activities in Strathcona County, or check online.
