Centre in the Park Volunteer Plaza named – A tribute to Strathcona's strong volunteer spirit
On September 26, Strathcona County Council approved the name Volunteer Plaza as the official name for the central civic plaza that will be built in Centre in the Park.
"Volunteers are the heart of this community. It is fitting to have a place of honour celebrating volunteer contributions within a development that will create a heart for our community," says Mayor Cathy Olesen. "Volunteer Plaza will stand as tribute to all volunteers who have built, and who will continue to build, Strathcona County into the desirable and quality place that we so proudly call home."
The naming also salutes and coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Information and Volunteer Centre. For three decades, this organization has been providing residents and visitors with program and service information about our community, and has been the vital link for volunteerism in Strathcona County.
Design for the plaza and the volunteer commemorative feature is part of the design work underway for the next phase of Centre in the Park. Volunteer Plaza will be located at the east end of the Prairie Walk. The Prairie Walk is a uniquely designed walkway that will feature elements reflecting Strathcona County's history, culture and natural environment. It will connect Festival Place and Volunteer Plaza, and link to the trail system.
