Youth Council celebrates 20 years

Twenty years ago a group of 12 youth dedicated themselves to making a difference in the community by joining the first Strathcona County Youth Council. Since its inception in 1990, the council has had over 250 members, who have contributed more than 25,000 volunteer hours and completed over 150 youth projects and activities.
“Over the past 20 years, the Strathcona County Youth Council has planned and carried out many initiatives, both locally and globally, that have positively impacted our community,” says Mayor Linda Osinchuk. “It is a pleasure to congratulate and thank all members as they celebrate this anniversary year. Together with Council, we will continue to enhance communication with our youth. Connectivity builds a stronger fabric in our community.”
The Youth Council invites residents and alumni to its 20th anniversary celebration kick off on November 8, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at County Hall, 2001 Sherwood Drive. Festivities will include a slideshow down memory lane, the stories and achievements of Youth Council members and cake. Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP to Isabelle at 780-464-4044.
The Strathcona County Youth Council is mentored by Strathcona County Family and Community Services. The council is made up of junior and senior high school students from both rural and urban areas. They volunteer in the community, identify and discuss various youth issues, and work to achieve a better future for the youth of Strathcona County.
