Work progressing on Centre in the Park

Centre in the Park, Strathcona County's multi-use development in Sherwood Park, is moving ahead, led by the opening of the Prairie Walk at the beginning of August.

A report presented to County Council today indicates that the project is progressing on schedule toward completion of the Community Centre in late 2010.

We are well on our way to fulfilling the long-held vision for this area as a heart for the community and a place for culture, celebration and learning, says Mayor Cathy Olesen.

Prairie Walk
The community will get a first look at the public spaces in Centre in the Park with the opening of the first phase of the Prairie Walk in early August in time for the 2007 Western Canada Summer Games. The Prairie Walk is a major east-west pedestrian corridor connecting Festival Place and the main central plaza, Volunteer Plaza. The walkway will further link to Sherwood Park's trail system.

Community energy system
Commissioning of the Community Energy Centre is in its final stages. Based on the environmental features of the building, the County has applied for the Community Energy Centre to be certified under an international program, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). This would be the first building in Strathcona County to receive LEED certification.

The community energy system supplies hot water heat from the Community Energy Centre through a network of underground pipes. The system began operation last November and now heats seven buildings in the area.

Community Centre
Design of the Community Centre is well underway. This building will include a new library, flexible indoor and outdoor community and public spaces, space for Family and Community Services, new municipal space and underground parking.

Later this summer, when site preparation begins, Family and Community Services will move to an interim location in the Sherwood Business Park near Millennium Place. To assure uninterrupted access to County Hall during construction, some changes will occur later this summer to parking and access in the vicinity of County Hall.
