Safety Facts and Tips
Top 10 list of fire safety tips:
1. Never leave cooking food on the stovetop unattended and keep a close eye on food cooking inside the oven. Always have a lid or cutting board nearby to slide over the pan in case of fire.\
2. Fixed and portable space heaters need to be at least one metre (three feet) away from anything that can burn.
3. Smokers are encouraged to smoke outside. Smoking materials are one of the leading causes of fire deaths.
4. Keep matches and lighters out of the reach and sight of children.
5. Inspect electrical cords for fraying, broken plugs or loose connections. Do not put electrical cords under the rugs or pinch behind furniture.
6. Burning candles need to be at least 0.3 metres (one foot) away from anything that can burn. Be sure to put them out when you leave the room or go to sleep.
7. Make a home escape plan for your family and practice it so everyone knows what to do in a fire emergency.
8. Install a smoke alarm on every level of your home and outside all sleeping areas.
9. Test your smoke alarms regularly and change the batteries in battery-operated ones when you change your clock to Daylight Savings Time. Smoke detectors that are 10 years old and older need to be replaced.
10. If you must escape through smoke, crawl low on your hands and knees to the closest exit.
