The 2012 winter recruitment for Full-time Fire Fighter-Paramedic/EMTs is now closed. Please note that applications will only be accepted during an active recruit timeframe.
Recruiting timelines:
This process usually takes six months to complete with the following steps:
- competition opening date - January 1, 2012
- closing date - January 31, 2012
- recruitment open house at Fire Station #1 - January 23, 2012
- aptitude test - February 9, 2012
- agility testing at the University of Alberta - (tentative) March 26 to April 13, 2012
- OSCE (medical skill testing) - April 28 and 29, 2012
- interviews - May 15-31, 2012
- medicals - June 2012
- offer of employment - July 2012
- anticipated start date - September 2012
A completed Firefighter Qualifications - Checklist must accompany a resume when applying during an active recruitment.
Qualifications
To become a Fire Fighter-Paramedic/EMT with Strathcona County Emergency Services, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- a valid Alberta Class 3 and 4 Driver's license with no more than 7 demerits (provide a recent "within 6 months" driver's abstract). Class 1 or 2 is acceptable.
- air brake endorsement (Q)
- a minimum Grade 12 education or recognized equivalent
- registered with Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP) as a Paramedic or EMT
- be legally entitled to work in Canada
- able to pass medical/physical standards, including:
- normal colour vision and visual acuity of 20/40 combined, uncorrected (laser eye surgery completed at least one year prior to application will be considered)
- no more than 30 decibel hearing loss in either ear at an average of 500, 1000 and 2000 CPS (short-listed applicants will be tested)
- one of the following:
- NFPA 1001 Level 2 and EMT
- Paramedic (Having NFPA 1001 Level 2 is preferred. If applicant does not have this qualification he/she will be sent for training.)
- 2nd year Paramedic students are welcome to apply
- registered with Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP)

In order to function effectively at emergency incidents, a Fire Fighter-Paramedic/EMT should have the following characteristics and skills.
- The ability to work in a seamless fire/rescue/EMS environment
- The physical strength and capacity for rapid, intense and sustained effort
- An ability to carry out orders at emergencies, combined with the capacity to assess and act on own initiative and/or work effectively as part of a team
- A practical understanding of a wide range of subjects related to fire, rescue, dangerous goods and emergency medical services; including the ability to operate and understand the operation of mechanical equipment

IAFF Local 2461
All full-time firefighters belong to the IAFF Local 2461 and enjoy the following opportunities:

- fire fighter annual salary range is $66,802 to $85,644 (as of January 2011) working 42 hours a week
- Salary matching plan: new hires who are members in good standing with another IAFF local can carry over their current classification to Strathcona County with regards to salary only (up to the level of Fire Fighter 1st Class). Candidates in good standing with other unions (HSAA, CUPE, etc.) may also be considered.

Recruitments are advertised in local newspapers and under the Job Opportunities section of the Strathcona County website. Resumes, accompanied by a Firefighter Qualifications - Checklist, are accepted only during advertised recruitment periods. Proof of qualifications is required at time of writing aptitude test.
