We are seeking a Deputy Fire Chief to join our Emergency Services team. You are a natural leader, with skills and ability to provide guidance and leadership for the Strathcona County Regional Emergency Communication Centre, Fire Prevention & Investigation Branch and SCES Information Technology Services. As one of three Deputy Fire Chiefs, you will be responsible for community and industrial planning processes, incident command and Emergency Operation Centre leadership, technology implementation and liaison with various industrial organizations and municipal departments.

Responsibilities:
- Manages the Strathcona County Regional Emergency Communication Centre, SCES Information Technology Services and the Fire Prevention & Investigation Branch
- Respond as Deputy Chief to a variety of incidents and provide necessary leadership and guidance
- During significant events respond to the Strathcona County Emergency Operations Center and assist as a member of SCES incident management
- Leads liaison and communication with industrial organizations, developers, municipal partners and the Government of Alberta to ensure compliance with government regulations
- Review and provide feedback to industry development applications and emergency response plans and municipal development plans
- Lead negotiations and discussions with stakeholders to ensure standards are met in growth and development of the community
- Oversee the community safety, public education and fire and injury prevention programs including the design, cost-recovery, evaluation and continuous improvement of the programs
- Coach, mentor and guide staff and foster team building
- Represent Strathcona County on all provincial accreditation, fire underwriter survey and other reviews of the Fire Prevention and Investigation Branch
- Design and implement business cases to capitalize on opportunities for revenue generation
- Establish and maintain technological requirements of hardware and software to ensure quality control
- Negotiate and manage contracts with stakeholders for the provision of emergency communication services, including development of new revenue streams and new clients
- Provide direction and guidance in the delivery of emergency services
- Provide input in developing the annual budget and allocate resources as required
- Manage risks including ensuring regulations and standards are met
Qualifications:
- A minimum of a degree in Management Administration, Public Administration, Fire Science or a related field with at least five years of related experience in an emergency services leadership role
- Experience of a progressively responsible nature in emergency services and administration, including supervisory responsibility
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License
- Knowledge of Quality Management Systems including ISO 9001 and Commission on Fire Accreditation International accreditation, Incident Command System, federal, provincial and municipal legislation related to emergency services, community safety, and emergency communications
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills as well as outstanding interpersonal skills to diplomatically and tactfully address situations and build effective working relationships
- Demonstrated ability to work with all stakeholders including elected officials administrative leadership, municipal departments, industry, government agencies, dispatch customers, etc.
- Able to work under pressure, manage a variety of projects simultaneously, establish priorities and meet tight deadlines
- Capable of commanding or leading stressful emergency situations requiring accurate and prompt decision making
- Well-developed skills to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, and make recommendations in support of department goals and objectives
- Excellent leadership skills to motivate, encourage, and mentor staff in a challenging and dynamic environment
- Must be self-directed, motivated and have the initiative and ability to identify strategic business issues and develop effective solutions
- Effective decision maker who can provide recommendations with political and organizational sensitivity
- Ability to foster positive labour relations while working in both a union and non-union environment
- Criminal record check
This is a full-time, permanent position with a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package. Travel is required to various locations and communities to attend meetings or respond to emergency scenes, disasters or critical incidents. Participates in the Chief-on-Call rotation coverage which may require working extended hours on events and weekends.
