Cellphone bylaw
Provincial Distracted Driving Law In Effect
The provincial distracted driving legislation supercedes Strathcona County’s current cellphone bylaw. Drivers caught using hand-held cellphones will now be fined $172 under the provincial distracted driving legislation.
Note: Drivers are still responsible for paying fines already issued under Strathcona County’s cellphone bylaw.
As of September 1, 2011, the provincial Distracted Driving Law restricts drivers from:
- Using hand-held cell phones
- Texting or emailing
- Using electronic devices like laptop computers, video games, cameras, etc.
- Entering information on GPS units
- Reading printed materials in vehicle
- Writing, printing or sketching
- Personal grooming
Visit the Government of Alberta website for more information, including a fact sheet, about the new provincial Distracted Driving Law.
