Dog license year is from March 1 - February 28/29
- All dogs are required to have a valid licence. Dog licences are valid for one year.
- If you have a new dog, you are required to obtain a licence within 15 days of acquiring it.
- If you have a dog licence with Strathcona County, watch for your renewal notice arriving by mail in early March.
- If you no longer have a dog that was previously licenced, it is important to notify us of the change.
First Licence - free for the year
Each new owner of a spayed or neutered dog receives the first licence year FREE for that dog. Owners of dogs under six months of age receive their first licence year FREE.
OUR DOG LICENCE YEAR IS FROM MARCH 1 - FEBRUARY 28/29.
Dog licence fees support
Your licence allows us to:
- return lost dogs by tracing their identification
and contacting their owners - return licenced dogs once in a 12-month period
for FREE, under the new "Free return to owner" program - provide food, shelter and care for lost dogs
- support the adoption of unclaimed dogs
- transport dogs whose owners cannot immediately be
contacted to the Edmonton Humane Society,
where impound charges apply

What is the "FREE RETURN TO OWNER" program?
A current licence allows an Enforcement Services Officer to contact
the owner and return the lost dog to the owner. Owners are not
charged the $175 fine for a dog-at-large.
A free return is offered to each dog once per year.
Dogs must always wear their tags.
Collar tags are not dated and are not replaced annually. If your dog's
tag is lost or illegible, you can replace it. Visit Strathcona County
Enforcement Services at 911 Bison Way, Sherwood Way, Sherwood Park.
It's easy to purchase or renew a dog licence. Remember to provide documentation of neuter or spay once.

Dog licence renewals can also be paid:
- through major banks, online banking or telephone banking
Arrange for this type of payment by contacting your bank.
Please use your dog tag number as your ID or account number as required.

Note: Dog licences cannot be paid on the Strathcona County website.
How many dogs can I have?
A maximum of two licenced dogs in any County household, without an over-limit permit.
Over-limit permit
You may apply for an over-limit permit to keep more than two dogs. The cost for the permit is $60. The permit is renewable annually. The over-limit permit can be revoked for violations of the dog bylaw. An over-limit dog permit must be obtained in person at Strathcona County RCMP & Enforcement Services, 911 Bison Way, Sherwood Park.
