2011/12 School Bussing Changes
Strathcona County Transit (SCT) has safely provided student transportation for junior and senior high students in Sherwood Park for more than 20 years. Over the years, service requirements have grown and changed, resulting in the current services to schools. In the 2011/2012 school year, due to school board decisions and our desire to provide the most effective and efficient transit services we need to make changes to the services students use.
We are simplifying service. For the majority of students this new system allow for shorter ride times and more flexibility. Schedules will be easier to understand and students will no longer be riding "school specials," allieviating confusion between buses. Here is how it works:
- All students riding public transit will ride their established local bus route to either Strathcona Station on Bethel Drive or the Transit Centre on Ordze Road.
- From the terminals, students will now be able to get to their schools by taking either:
- a short trip on one of our new peak-hour routes, or
- a quick trip on one of the established local routes.
We have developed this map that includes the schools that will continue to be using public transit. Look for the blue stars and you'll find the routes you will be riding.
The schedules for these new routes have not yet been developed, but they will be made public by August 2, 2011 on this site. Hard copies of these schedules will also be distributed along with the September bus passes. In an effort to help students get used to their new routes,Transit staff will be visible and ready to help students find the correct busses at the terminals on the first couple of days of the new school year in September.
For the 2011/12 school term, only the catholic schools have chosen to use public transit for their students in grades 7-12. Route are developed based on demand. Based on expected ridership, the new routes will no longer be going past all schools in Sherwood Park. This may increase walking distances for students in the public system who wish to take public transit instead of the yellow bus.
