Transit announcements

Construction update - May 13, 2013

The Anthony Henday construction is now hitting Strathcona County residents with full force.  With Both Wye Road/Sherwood Park freeway and the baseline Road interchanges now in full swing, traffic interruption should be expected daily. Traffic patterns will change based on construction needs and the speed limit will remain 50 km/hr in construction zones. These disruptions are anticipated for the foreseeable future.

What this means for transit users is that transit may experience delays due to this construction. We will do our best to remain on schedule, but we cannot move faster than the traffic. we highly recommend that customers plan their trips to accommodate for these potential traffic tie-ups. Consider taking and earlier bus. That 15 minutes may make the difference between arriving at your destination on time or late.

Important changes to traffic flow impact transit beginning April 2013

Beginning April 2013 until approximately 2016, motorists traveling in and out of the County will encounter significant interruptions due to the Anthony Henday construction. These interruptions will affect how long it takes vehicles to travel to and from Edmonton, including transit. Transit users should adjust their trips to allow for the longer ride times.

In anticipation of the 76 Avenue ramp closure in April 2013 effectively removes three stops, #2951, #2137 and #2485, from our service. View the map showing route 419 changes. An additional schedule will be put into effect June 29 in order to help our users understand the upcoming delays. As we receive updates from the Province we will do our best to keep our passengers informed.

Summary of key impacts on Transit at this time:

  • permanent closure of the 76 Avenue ramp results in changes to route 419, removing stops #2951, #2137 and #2485
  • traffic pattern changes on Baseline Road. New lights now will help motorists merge onto and off of Baseline road, however this impedes freeflow travel down Baseline.

Stop 9150 is moving (Route 423 Southbound)

April 29, 2013, stop #9150 currently located just north of Foxhaven Drive on Cloverbar Road, is being relocated to the northside of Colwill Boulevard on Cloverbar Road. This is approximately one block north of its current location.

New bus stop on Emerald Drive

Shopping at the new Walmart on Emerald Drive just got easier. As of February 19, 2013 a new bus stop will be in use on Emerald Drive between Eton Boulevard and Ellesmere Lane on the north side of the street, just across from the new Walmart. It is bus stop #7902 used for west bound 421.

Please be a courteous commuter

Consider this, what bothers you when you ride the bus? Passengers using a seat to hold their bags instead of letting you sit down? Loud conversations on cell phones? People kicking your seat? A backpack inadvertently banging you in the head? The strong cologne being worn by the guy next to you?

All of these things are a reality when riding the bus, but if you are conscious of your behaviour and others are conscious of their behaviours, together we can alleviate these annoyances.

Please be a courteous commuter and:

  • Do not wear strong perfumes and colognes
  • One seat = one passenger
  • When listening to music wear earphones and keep the volume low
  • Keep all conversations at a respectful volume
  • Keep all bags on your lap or at your feet
  • Take all your garbage with you.
  • Avoid eating on the bus.
  • Be patient. Pushing is not necessary. Excuse yourself when exiting through a crowd.
  • Be polite. Move to the back

Satellite overflow parking lots still available

Due to the continued construction of the Anthony Henday Drive, the overflow parking lot on Fir Street, west of the Sherwood Park Transit Centre, is permanently closed. Parking is available in the Transit Centre parkade and where signs indicate along Fir Street. Please observe the no-parking signs on Fir Street and in Village on the Lake. Parking in commercial parking lots in the area is for shop customers only. Vehicles parked in unauthorized areas may be ticketed and/or towed.

While using local service is still your best option to reduce parking stress, Transit has found satellite parking lots where commuters who must use their cars can still park. Please be prepared to show your passes when boarding the shuttle service from these new lots. Shuttle are designed to connect with commuter routes leaving the Transit Centre, so if you normally catch a 7:30 a.m. commuter bus, you must be on the 7:15 a.m. shuttle in order to make your bus.

Inclement weather

As we all know living in Alberta can present us with a lot of weather related issues. One minute it is warm and the sun is out, the next there is a freak snow storm and traffic comes to a grinding halt. Throughout all weather conditions, Transit works hard to provide safe and reliable service to all of our customers, everyday.

Now that winter road conditions have arrived, Transit reminds our customers to be prepared. It's a fact of the season: minor service disruptions will occur due to weather and traffic issues.

  • Wear footwear that is warm with good traction, and if possible, water proof.
  • Make sure you wear a warm jacket and bring along your gloves and hats.
  • Listen to the weather and traffic reports, and plan your morning commute accordingly.

It is rare that service is disrupted as significantly as it was on November 7, 2012. We thank you for your patience as we dealt with the adverse weather and road conditions. Once again, know that our mission is to provide safe and reliable service to our customers. We are going to safely get you where you are going as quickly as possible.

Standing on buses

We recognize that standing on a bus is not ideal. However, due to the surging popularity of transit services, it is likely that customers travelling during rush hour may have to occasionally stand. While university is in session, standing will be more common. The County is continuing to pursue more seating options and appreciates our customers' patience.
