Strathcona County History
It's important that we preserve our local history and heritage for many reasons. Perhaps the most important is that a shared sense of our past leads us into the future together.
The pages in this section will help you discover the unique heritage of Strathcona County. You will find historical overviews, maps, pictures, stories and personal reflections of our past.
Survey of historic sites
Strathcona County’s legacy of historic buildings and cultural landscapes provides in our modern-day world a “sense of place” that reflects Strathcona’s rich past. In 2012, the County is conducting a survey of such historic sites and we are looking for input from the community.
This survey and a subsequent inventory are recommendations coming from the Strathcona County's Heritage Resources Management Plan, approved by Council in 2008.
What is the purpose of this survey?
A survey of historic sites will identify significant historic buildings and cultural landscapes in Strathcona County.
Historic sites include historic buildings and cultural landscapes.
- A historic building could include a farm site or a country church, a modest cabin constructed using traditional practices or a relatively newer building with significant architectural features.
- It could be located in Sherwood Park or a rural hamlet, or it could be in a rural farming area or on an older acreage.
- A site might also be associated with a significant person or event.
- A cultural landscape might be a section of an old trail that was once an important transportation route.
The sites identified will be used to create a Places of Interest List. Inclusion in the survey will have no legal impact on a property and will not limit its future use. We hope the project will encourage public interest in local history, and further conservation and protection of local historic resources.
What kinds of sites are eligible?
Sites eligible for the survey should be significant to the history of Strathcona County. Sites may include:
- residences
- outbuildings
- churches
- schools
- public buildings
- commercial buildings
- trails
- bridges
- roadway
Who is conducting the survey?
To carry out the survey work, Strathcona has contracted Heritage Collaborative Inc., a professional heritage planning consulting firm. Over the next several months, contract staff will locate historic sites across the County. The work will involve photographing and researching historic structures and cultural landscapes. Contract staff conducting the survey will not access private property unless granted permission by the landowner.

Anna and Eryn of Heritage Collaborative Inc. will scour the County this summer, in search of historic buildings and cultural landscapes for inclusion in a list of historic places of interest.
